We are very pleased to announce that the 8th International Conference “Egypt at its Origins” on Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt" will be held in Kraków again from the 16th to 20th September 2024. The conference will be hosted at the Jagiellonian University, in the Auditorium Maximum (33 Krupnicza street, Kraków), in the very city centre.

This international conference series is now the most important international meeting for archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, art historians and epigraphists working on Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt. The 8th International Conference on Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt marks the continuation of the previous successful conferences which in general happens every three years: Kraków (2002), Toulouse (2005), London (2008), New York (2011), Cairo (2014), Vienna (2017), and Paris (2022). With the organisation of the 8th meeting in Kraków, we intend to make a memorable circle and gather a much expanded network of experts from different countries than in the first conference.

The experts will present and discuss their respective research relating a significant range of themes within the broader subject of the origins of the Egyptian State (from the Predynastic period to the beginning of the Old Kingdom). Origins 8 aims to provide a forum to bring together the latest studies on the periods from a wide range of perspectives, based on field discoveries, material analyses, theoretical considerations, etc. Following the success of the Paris meeting, papers and posters will be presented in the sessions listed below:

  • Archives and museums studies
  • Cult, ideology and social complexity
  • Egypt in context
  • Funerary archaeology
  • Iconography
  • Lithic studies
  • Lower Egypt
  • Material, technology and craft specialisation
  • Pottery studies
  • Rock art
  • Textual evidence
  • Upper Egypt

Abstracts received after the deadline will not be accepted.
